Le Lyceen(The high school student) (English title: Winter boy) 2022, France, Directed by Christophe Honore
Film starts with a happy provincial family living on an idilic Alpine valley villiage. Father, Mother (Isabella) , elder brother (Quintin) and protagonist Lucas. Lucas is a teenager and a high school student who is at the boarding school. He gets the news that his loving father is admitted at the hospital in a critical condition at the middle of the night and rushes with his elder brother.
When he reaches the village, he gets the news that is father died in a road accident and all his relatives are there. He is devastated and goes on a self hate, self distructive phase of his life. He is longing for love and his place in the society whilst coming of age and exploring life without his father and how to take up responsibilities. Things seems too much for him.
Although the main charecter is an young gay man, it's not a queer film. Instead this film explores the mental health and the bereavement of the loved one. Terrific lead role and amazing support by Julliete Binoche as the grieving wife and mother. Brilliantly support by upcoming star in French cinema, Vincent Lacoste. It's a love letter to their father/ husband and how they try to move on. Out now on Mubi.
